Auto Glass and Windshield Chip Repair
Rock chips filled before they run, and a straight answer on when repair stops being an option.
A chip is cheap. A crack is not.
Catch it while it is still a chip.
Trucks collect rock chips faster than anything else on the road. You sit higher, you follow gravel trucks and job site traffic, and a big upright windshield is a big target. A chip is a small problem on a short clock: temperature swings, a rough road and body flex all push it toward becoming a crack, and once it runs, repair is off the table.
Repairable, usually
- Chips smaller than a quarter.
- Cracks shorter than the length of a dollar bill.
- Damage outside the driver's direct line of sight.
- Impacts that have not reached the edge of the glass.
Replacement territory
- Damage sitting in the driver's direct sight line, where a repair leaves visible distortion.
- Cracks that have reached the windshield edge, which compromises structural integrity.
- Deep chips that penetrate multiple layers of the laminated glass.
- Damage that has already spread across a large area of the windshield.

How do you know if a windshield crack needs replacement or just repair?
Cracks shorter than a dollar bill and chips smaller than a quarter typically qualify for repair. Damage in the driver's direct sight line, cracks reaching the windshield edge, or deep chips that penetrate multiple layers of glass generally call for replacement instead.
Why do trucks seem to get more rock chips?
Ride height and traffic. You sit higher and closer to what the vehicle ahead throws up, you spend more time behind gravel and construction traffic, and a truck windshield is larger and more upright, so it takes strikes flatter.
How fast should I get a chip filled?
Soon. A chip that has stayed put for a month can run across the glass on the first hard cold snap. Filling it while it is small is the cheapest version of this repair you will ever be offered.
Will the repair be invisible?
A filled chip is dramatically less visible and the glass is structurally sound again, but a faint mark can remain at the impact point. We will tell you what to expect before we start.
